Keep it Classy, Ladies

Your body is sacred. Keep it that way.

“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?” 1 Corinthians 3:16

I’m sitting in class, finished with my assignments, and look around the room. I’m a girl, so what do I look at? What everyone is wearing, duh! Guys are wearing their typical basketball and khaki shorts with the same NCAA college shirts that they wear every week. Girls on the other hand range from over-sized sweaters and leggings to tight tank-tops and super skinny jeans. I can say this because I am a teenage girl, but ladies! Cover up your junk!

It takes me back to 2 Samuel 11 with David and Bathsheba. To sum it all up, David went on his roof one night and saw Bathsheba (who was married to Uriah the Hittite) bathing. Then, David slept with her, got her pregnant, and had her husband killed without her knowing. Pretty rough, right? Don’t get me wrong, David was a great guy. David killed Goliath, champion of the Philistines, when he was only a youth and Goliath a giant and veteran warrior. Also, despite several opportunities, David refused to kill King Saul, God’s first anointed king, who was pursuing David out of mad jealousy. King David was a man of disparities. He was single-mindedly committed to God, yet guilty of some of the most serious sins recorded in the Old Testament.

Now, what does this have to do with modesty? Guys, especially teenage guys, have minds full of lust and ungodly desires. So when we, girls, have our tanks hanging a little too low, or our pants on a little too tight, guys minds go in all different directions-just like what happened when David saw Bathsheba taking a bath. However, don’t go thinking that “oh, well no dude is going to see me in the bathtub so I’m good.” Man’s nature has not changed, and this reading of the Bible will reveal the same emotions, passions and human features that men have today. And it is obvious that it needs to be made relevant to those who profess to be Christians today and yet embellish themselves in their mini-skirts, low necklines, tight outfits and see-thru styles.

When we better understand the doctrine behind the principles of modesty, we realize that modesty is the virtue that guides and moderates action.

Instructing the Christians in Corinth to flee from sexual immorality, the apostle Paul explained, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body” (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). God created our bodies, Jesus redeemed them, and the Holy Spirit indwells them. This makes our body the very temple of the Holy Spirit of God, which needs to be highly cared for and protected.

What all of this leads down to is sin. Do we really want to become of the world and dress how society expects us to?  Society tells us to slip on the daisy dukes in the summer, and pull out the yoga pants in the winter-but how does God tell us to dress? 1 Timothy 2:9-10 explains that “I also want the women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, adorning themselves, not with elaborate hairstyles or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.”

Don’t save the god-honoring clothes for Sundays, rather join with me in the rebellion against society and dress to serve the Lord.

“Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30
